Why it's worth checking out

Milton Vineyard is a small, family-owned and run boutique vineyard on Tasmania’s east coast, with a cellar door at 14635 Tasman Highway, Swansea, in the Freycinet region. It is a place to visit for cool-climate wine, estate views and a closer look at a long-running family farming story. The cellar door welcomes visitors daily from 10.30am to 4pm, and larger groups are asked to contact the team ahead of time.

The vineyard’s setting is a key part of the experience. From the cellar door, visitors can take in views across the lake and vines while tasting Milton’s range of wines. The estate has 26 hectares under vine, with plantings including Pinot Noir, Syrah, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Chardonnay and Gewürztraminer, as well as younger Tempranillo vines. The winery describes its site as having a distinctive micro-climate, and its focus is on producing small quantities of handmade wine with close attention to work in the vineyard.

Milton’s history stretches back to 1826, when the property was first farmed for wool. The current family has farmed at Milton since 1980. After an early vineyard site proved difficult because of frost and vine vigour, the family replanted on dry, rocky, free-draining ground near the cellar door. Grapes were initially sold to Hardy’s while the family developed its viticulture, before launching the Milton label in 2005. The vineyard has since built its range around varieties suited to its cool coastal conditions, with Pinot Noir and Syrah singled out in its own account as particularly successful or popular.

Visitors can explore the estate-grown range through the cellar door, including reserve wines and fresh sparkling wines. The online shop lists bottles such as Reserve Riesling, Reserve Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Rosé and Reserve Syrah. Milton also runs a wine club offering member discounts, pre-release access, private tastings by appointment and deliveries that can be adjusted to suit the member. For a more extended visit, the property has previously promoted its restaurant, A Tale among the Vines, although its website notes seasonal closure periods, so it is worth checking directly before planning a meal. Milton Vineyard is best suited to travellers seeking a relaxed, wine-centred stop, couples looking for a scenic tasting, and groups who organise ahead.
