Practical details
Why it's worth checking out
Wilder Tasmania is a nature-focused place to stay in Tasmania’s North-West, set in the foothills of Tarinimari/Mt Roland and about 45 kilometres from Cradle Mountain–Lake St Clair National Park. The retreat offers direct access to the surrounding wilderness, while Sheffield is around a 15-minute drive away. Its position makes it suited to travellers who want time in the mountain landscape without giving up a comfortable base for resting and exploring.
Accommodation is provided in private geodesic domes and at Wilder Lodge. Each dome has its own ensuite, insulation and wood heating, with mountain views and opportunities for stargazing. The lodge is reserved for Wilder guests and is described as the social centre of the retreat, with wood fires, food and drinks, and comfortable places to unwind. Together, the dome accommodation and lodge create a quieter stay that is closely connected to the surrounding environment rather than separated from it.
Wilder is also more than accommodation. The site hosts cultural and live music events, and caters for concerts, retreats, artist stays, long weekends and weddings. Its event spaces are intended for touring artists, creators and visitors to share experiences in a setting shaped by the landscape. That makes it relevant for guests looking for a distinctive celebration or creative gathering, as well as for people visiting the region for the outdoors and wanting somewhere with a strong sense of place.
The venue’s story is part of its appeal. Wilder grew from the former Old Black Stump restaurant and function room, which operated at the site from 1980 until 2018, before being reborn as Wilder Tasmania in 2024. Creative Director Matt Fell developed the concept with local business owners and collaborators, bringing together dome accommodation, a hand-built lodge and a focus on music. The site also acknowledges the long history of the area, including Palawa and Pakana culture and the former Gowrie Park settlement associated with the Mersey Forth power development. For visitors, Wilder offers a stay that combines mountain scenery, thoughtful accommodation, shared lodge spaces and a venue built around local history, creative work and live events.
Spot Score
The Spot Score is our composite of five signals — two about the venue's standing with visitors and three about how complete and current this listing is. It is not a visitor rating and not a verdict on the food or the experience. The 5.0 from 45 reviews is Google's visitor rating, shown separately and never altered by us.
