Why it's worth checking out

Hopfields Brewery combines a working brewery with a full bar, restaurant and beer garden in Margate, Tasmania. The venue has ten taps pouring a changing selection of beer styles and cider, alongside a Tassie-focused wine list, local and international spirits, and non-alcoholic options. The kitchen offers a hearty, beer-inspired menu including snacks, burgers and other dishes, making it suited to a relaxed meal as well as a drink.

Beer is made onsite by head brewer JJ King, who maintains a year-round range of core styles while experimenting with seasonal releases and one-off brews. The featured beers show the breadth of the range: the stout is built around roasted malt, dark chocolate, coffee and caramel notes; the IPA combines tropical fruit with pine, resin and assertive bitterness; and the Hazy Pale Ale brings juicy pineapple, mango and citrus flavours. There is also a mid-strength Pale Ale with citrus, stone fruit and pine character, offering a lighter starting point for exploring the brewery’s beers.

The setting gives Hopfields more character than a standard taproom. The heritage-listed Brookfield building once served as a seed-drying shed for Yates, and the room now housing the fermentation tanks was previously used to hang and dry hops. The surrounding paddocks were part of one of Tasmania’s notable hop-growing regions during the early to mid-20th century. Restored over time, the building connects the present-day brewery with the agricultural history of the area.

Hopfields was established by local couple Nick and Bec, who saw potential in the historic Brookfield Shed and wanted to create a friendly place where locals and visitors could share their beer. Its cosy atmosphere, varied drinks list and full kitchen make it a practical choice for casual catch-ups and group meals, while the venue also caters for functions from about 20 to 80 people, including birthdays, work events and engagement parties. A beer garden, restaurant and onsite brewing provide several ways to settle in, whether you are visiting for a meal, trying a new release or organising a larger gathering.
