Why it's worth checking out

Waldheim Cabins offers a simple overnight base inside Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, around 5km beyond the park’s northern entrance at Cradle Mountain, Tasmania. The eight cabins sit between buttongrass plains and ancient temperate rainforest, giving guests the chance to stay within the World Heritage Area rather than outside the park. Walking tracks begin nearby, with several routes leading from the cabin area.

The accommodation is deliberately practical rather than hotel-style. Cabins are available in four-, six- and eight-berth configurations, with single bunk beds, electric heating, an electric stove, basic cooking equipment, crockery, cutlery and a small fridge. Power is limited, and tap water at the cabins is not potable, so visitors should plan accordingly. Guests need to bring their own bedding and toiletries; linen can be arranged during booking for an additional charge.

Two amenities blocks provide hot showers and flushing toilets. The cabins are non-smoking, and guests are expected to keep their accommodation clean during their stay and leave dishes ready for the next visitors. A minimum two-night stay applies in most cases, with a separate arrangement available for Overland Track walkers seeking one night. Check-in is from 2pm, check-out is by 10am, and keys are collected from the Cradle Mountain Visitor Centre, including through an after-hours key safe when required.

Waldheim suits walkers, families and groups looking for straightforward accommodation close to Cradle Mountain’s tracks, as well as visitors who value a self-contained base in a national park setting. It can also work for independent travellers, provided they are comfortable with bunk-style cabins, limited facilities and bringing supplies. Access requires planning: visitors generally use the Cradle Mountain shuttle bus and need a valid Parks Pass, while vehicle access is restricted during shuttle operating hours. Campfires are not permitted because the area is designated fuel-stove only. The cabins are managed through Tasmania’s Parks and Wildlife Service, with booking and arrival information handled by the Cradle Mountain Visitor Centre.

Spot Score

59

The Spot Score is our composite of five signals — two about the venue's standing with visitors and three about how complete and current this listing is. It is not a visitor rating and not a verdict on the food or the experience. The 4.6 from 133 reviews is Google's visitor rating, shown separately and never altered by us.
