Why it's worth checking out
The Top Place Mountain Retreat offers a slower stay in Tasmania’s heartland, beneath the crags of Mother Cummings Peak and the Great Western Tiers. The retreat has four accommodation suites, with elevated views across farmland on one side and bushland on the other. It is a setting designed for spending time outdoors rather than simply using the property as a place to sleep.
Guests can explore the 100-acre property at their own pace, with wilderness walks suited to everyone from beginners to experienced hikers. There is a Waterhole for a dip, a firepit for sitting out beneath the night sky, cascading waterfalls to discover and secluded bushland spots for taking in the quiet. The landscape gives the retreat its character, with plenty of room to walk, pause and enjoy the surrounding scenery.
Although The Top Place feels removed from busy town life, the website places it about 20 minutes from Deloraine. The drive passes dairy farms framed by the Great Western Tiers, while the surrounding region provides access to hikes, caves, waterfalls and mountain biking. Visitors can also tour nearby food and drink producers, including cheeseries, a raspberry farm, a distillery, wineries, craft breweries, an ice creamery and chocolate makers.
The retreat also makes a useful base for exploring the wider area around Chudleigh, Mole Creek, Sheffield, Meander and Deloraine. Nearby experiences listed by the venue include World Heritage cycling trails, Trowunna Wildlife Sanctuary, Mole Creek and King Solomon Caves, horse riding at Kimberly and guided fly-fishing at Meander. Cradle Mountain is described as a scenic 90-minute drive away. With its combination of private bushland, walking opportunities and access to regional attractions, The Top Place is best suited to travellers looking for a nature-focused stay and time to explore Tasmania’s central north-west.
