The Shed Restaurant

The Shed Restaurant offers a food-and-wine experience at Derwent Estate Wines in Salamanca, with a menu created by Head Chef Karen Jones. The kitchen focuses on locally sourced produce and aims to showcase Tasmanian ingredients, making the venue a natural fit for diners interested in regional food and wine.

Its setting is a key part of the experience. The restaurant sits beside the Derwent River, surrounded by vines and the history of the estate. The current building occupies the footprint of the former Shearing and Tractor Shed, which was used by the Hanigan family for sheep shearing and mechanical work. Timber from the original shearing shed has been incorporated into a number of the table bases, giving the space a direct connection to the property’s past.

The wider estate includes Rathbone Cottage, dating from around 1820 and now used as the Cellar Door, as well as the Homestead from around 1830. The restaurant’s story is tied to the family-owned vineyard and the people behind its wines, including winemaker John Schuts and viticulturist Andrew Hanigan, a fifth-generation member of the family business.

With its riverside vineyard setting, Tasmanian-focused menu and connection to Derwent Estate Wines, The Shed suits a relaxed food-and-wine visit as well as special occasions.
