Picnic Island

Picnic Island is an exclusive private-island retreat in Freycinet, with each booking giving guests the island to themselves. Located about 800 metres offshore, it accommodates up to eight people and is available for only 100 nights each year. The experience is designed around privacy, space and attentive service, with an island host providing support and concierge assistance before and during the stay.

Accommodation is arranged across a Primary Suite for two and three Island Suites sleeping up to six. The suites sit beside the rocky shoreline and look towards the surrounding seascape and the Hazards mountains. Features include king beds, ensuite bathrooms, premium linens, robes and slippers, kitchenettes, beach towels, yoga mats and Starlink Wi-Fi. The larger accommodation has bedrooms opening onto a deck at the water’s edge, while the Primary Suite includes a private kitchenette, coffee pod machine, inclusive mini bar and wall gym.

Dining is included, with a private chef preparing personalised meals based on the seasons and Tasmania’s local produce, including seafood, meat, wines and artisanal foods. Dietary preferences can be accommodated. Guests can also arrange more specialised food and drink experiences, such as visiting oyster beds, a sea-to-plate fishing trip, local winery and distillery tours, or private whisky and wine tastings on the island. Celebrity guest chefs are available for bespoke meals as an additional experience.

Days can be as active or unhurried as guests prefer. Included experiences range from guided Freycinet walks, marine discovery by private boat, kayaking, cycling, beach exploring, private yoga, oyster visits, and wine or whisky tours. Additional options include massage, guided meditation, sound baths, helicopter tours and air transfers. On the island itself, guests can swim in the surrounding waters, stroll the paths, watch Little Penguins in their natural habitat and take in the night sky. The island operates off-grid, using solar energy and collected rainwater.

It is reached by road from Hobart or Launceston airports, by a 30-minute seaplane or helicopter flight from Hobart, and then by a 10-minute boat trip from shore. The property has been reimagined under new ownership, with local materials and craftsmanship incorporated into its accommodation and a strong connection to the island’s history, wildlife and Tasmanian setting.
